canopic jar, lid
Lid of canopic jar depicting Hapy. Wood. Canopic jars were used to contain the viscera removed during mummification. Each of the Four Sons of Horus was responsible for protecting a different organ. From the 18th Dynasty canopic jars took the form of the god related to the organs contained therein. Hapy looked after the lungs. 12cm high.
