shabti
White limestone bottom half of shabti which has remains of black resin coating. 8.5cm high. Shabtis were put in tombs to do work for their owners in the afterlife. Occasionally also they were placed posthumously in temples and other sacred places so that the owner could take part in the festivals The black varnish was associated with Osiris and rebirth. It is often used on funerary objects.
