During his stay in Paris, Sargent travelled to various places he considered exotic in search of new themes for his painting. He visited Spain in 1879 and the following year, after a stay in Tangier and a trip to the Netherlands, he established himself for a few months in Venice, staying in the Palazzo Rezzonico.
