The Continence of Scipio
Depicted here is a famous example of clemency and restraint from Classical antiquity. After conquering Carthage, the Roman general Scipio gave a beautiful young woman he had received as war booty back to her fiancé. He even returned the gifts her parents offered him. Van Mander favoured bold colours, which are here set off to good advantage against the landscape.
