This photograph of a wrecked crane and barge was probably taken after 2 August 1918, when the Australian forces recaptured Peronne from the Germans. As the Germans were forced to retreat, they destroyed equipment as well as devastating towns and villages. Peronne had been held by the Allies early in March 1918, until 23 March when it fell in the face of the German advance. It was recaptured in …
