Masters of Botanical Illustration
Botanical illustration is a discipline of visual communication, with the clear scientific purpose of obtaining an accurate depiction of a plant by means of artistic techniques. This visual discipline plays an essential role in experimental and applied sciences, including the fields of biology, medicine, pharmacy, agriculture and horticulture. Since ancient times, graphic techniques have been used to illustrate that which it was not possible to express in words. Over time, botanical illustration has evolved as a scientific discipline, with ever-improving quality and accuracy of drawings. Generally, botanical illustrations represent plants as a generic idealisation, to avoid possible imperfections of individual specimens. In this cluster can be found a selection of botanical illustrations from some of the most talented and famous botanical illustrators (ie. G. D. Ehret, P. J. Redouté, E. Blackwell, J. Sowerby, P. Bessa, etc.) The selection ranges chronologically from the invention of the printing press (in the middle of the XV century) to the beginning of the XX century.
