The myth of Perseus and Medusa
The Greek myth, recorded in the Metamorphoses of Ovid - a Latin poet who lived in the Augustan age - tells the fight between the hero Perseus, son of Zeus, who, with the help of Athena, the nymphs and Mercury, beheaded Medusa, one of the three Gorgons. With her gaze she was capable of petrifying a man.
