Sash
National elections were first held in the Netherlands in 1796. All men aged twenty or older, who were not receiving poor relief, were entitled to vote for the National Assembly, the parliament of the Batavian Republic. The 126 members of parliament wore a sash with the inscription ‘representative’. This sash belonged to Jan Couperus, who was the deputy for the district of Gouda.
