Hammer, stonemasonry

This hammer was for use on marble. It was used to hit a chisel with short taps, rather than by swinging it, as marble is very brittle, and it was often used sideways. It is one of a collection of stonemasonry tools used by Mr Ben Hingston, a London stonemason who stopped working in the practical side of the trade in 1958. It was made for Mr Hingston by L. Pound, a Lambeth toolmaker.
