Antony and Cleopatra
After defeating Caesar's killers at Philippi, Antony wanted to meet Cleopatra for an alliance. Antony and Cleopatra became lovers but the famous relationship ended tragically with the death of the protagonists after the defeat at Actium. The love story between the Roman leader and the last pharaoh of Egypt inspired the works of numerous artists. William Shakespeare wrote the 5-act historical tragedy which was first performed in 1607 or 1608 and which was printed many times in the centuries.
