Egon Franke was born in Gliwice in 1935 to a German family who decided to stay in Poland after World War II. He fought three times at the Olympic Games for medals in the Polish team. In 1960, without success in Rome, then in Tokyo, where he won the first gold medal for Poland in fencing and a silver medal for the team. He also won medals in the world championships.
