My father Gilbert Wall was born in Hartlebury, Worcestershire, in 1890. He was one of 16 children and his family was involved in horse racing. Gilbert was a jockey, as were his brothers Bob, James and Charles. James was a jockey for the Kaiser before the war, and Charles a trainer in France.
