The Renaissance of Romani Re-presentation

For many centuries, stories and imagery around Gypsy, Roma, Traveller communities have reflected mainly external perspectives and misapprehensions. Contemporary artworks and narratives coming from within the communities as well as thousands of historical artefacts now becoming digitally available help to present an accurate re-presentation and paint rich pictures of their past and present.

In this visual essay by historian, researcher, and professor of Romani Studies, Dr Adrian R Marsh, himself of Welsh Gypsy origins, with an afterword from Romani artist and researcher, Imogen Bright Moon, we follow a path from misrepresentation to renaissance, exploring the histories of Gypsy, Roma, Traveller communities and opening a window to their contemporary artistic expressions.
