Stories connect people. Our stories bring you closer to events and figures from history, science, music, literature and much more, by revealing the treasures of digitised cultural heritage collections from Europe and beyond.

Together with partners and contributors, we've been publishing stories on the Europeana website for more than a decade. More than 300 different people or organisations have been part of this achievement. This summer, we've reached a milestone that’s exciting and significant for both us and our partners - there are now 1,000 stories on the Europeana website!

So to celebrate all that hard work, here’s a roundup of some of the ways you can immerse yourself in culture on Europeana.eu. Try them out and discover something new!

Get a quick story fix

Most of our stories are quick-reads - if you’re taking a short break and want a moment of inspiration or a bitesize bit of new knowledge, check out our stories. How about the history of botanical gardens in Europe?

You can also enjoy the new look we’ve given to some of our stories - larger, more immersive images bring you closer to the cultural heritage items on the website. Try this one - Vintage photographs of the Tour de France.

The 1000 stories are available in English, and increasingly, we are publishing stories in all of the 24 official EU languages.

Take some time to explore exhibitions

Our exhibitions are long-reads over several chapters, and reflect the cultural breadth of Europe, from fashion to sport and nature to music. So carve out some time, make yourself comfortable and find something you’re interested in, or try something new!

Our stories look at the people who make European culture - from artists to composers, from inventors to Nobel Prize winners. Some you’ll know already, some are waiting to be introduced to you for the first time!

Take a journey through Europe and beyond

We have published stories relating to many countries across Europe - from Austria to Bulgaria, from Spain to Sweden.

We have also featured narratives from great European cities such as Amsterdam, Dublin, Lisbon, London and Paris. You can also explore stories from many European Capitals of Culture.

Explore by topic and themes

There are stories on Europeana.eu about all sorts of topics - from Art Nouveau to industrial heritage and from saints to sport.

There are lots of topics, take a look at everything on the Stories page and search by tag. Are we missing something? Then let us know!

Discover under-represented communities and histories

We've worked hard to support underrepresented European histories on the Europeana website, spotlighting unheard voices and surfacing more stories about underrepresented communities.

For example, explore Black history, disability heritage, Islamic heritage, Jewish heritage, LGBTQ+ histories, Gypsy, Roma, Traveller heritage and women's history.

Explore by time

The stories on Europeana span centuries - from medieval times to the 20th century. Try some specific decades like the 1930s, 1950s or 1980s.

Can’t decide? Let us surprise you
