This object was collected by the German linguist G.A. Krause (1850-1938). He was the first European to visit the Dogon area. He left Accra in 1886 on a journey to Tombouctou. However, he never reached this destination. In Bandiagara, the capital of the Dogon area at that time, Tijani, the ruler of the Toucouleur, refused him permission to travel on to Tombouctou.
