Karl Hille was a gunner in the 84th Field Artillery Regiment and the 70th Field Artillery Regiment on the western front and wrote regularly from France to his family in Germany. At the end of 1917 he was shot in the trenches and wounded in the arm during trench warfare in Champagne. He was able to get to safety under his own power by crawling out of the danger zone.
