Wooden food bowl carved from a single piece of Toa wood (Casurina equisetifolia) used for making and serving a wide variety of softer dishes. The 'umete is both a preparation tool for mashing root veg in and a presentation vessel for serving food in. This example is of the boat shaped form and has dovetail shaped lugs at its bow and stern.
