By Joseph Sadler. In 1867 Garibaldi marched on Rome, but the Papal army, supported by a French auxiliary force, proved a match for his poorly-armed volunteers. He was taken prisoner, held captive for a time, and then again returned to Caprera. Irish soldiers may have fought with the Papal army against Garibaldi.
