Kvinnlig läskunnighet under medeltiden var förvånansvärt hög. Nunnor var författare och skriftlärare. Många andra kvinnor uppmuntrade läsning och lärande, särskilt ädla kvinnor. Ett exempel var Christine de Pizan, en poet vid hovet till kung Charles VI av Frankrike.
