Crani modelat
Overmodelled skull
Among the Iatmul people, the deceased were revered, and their memory and accomplishments were celebrated by preserving their skulls. This one was modelled and adorned as if it were a portrait in order to communicate the ancestor's features and power. The purpose of the skulls was to show, celebrate and commemorate a significant individual.
